Picade PCB and Pi4

$

Hi all,

I’ve looked but I can’t find a definite answer to this.

Does the Picade PCB (not the HAT) work with the Pi4? And if not, why not?

I think it should be OK, as the connections to the Pi are USB (type A) for power and data, and 3.5mm jack for audio. But does anyone have any other ideas?

Thanks

No "pipe" key - can't run setup!

Hi all, I’m new here. I’ve searched and searched, but can’t find an answer.
I’m setting up my picade, and have been mostly successful, except at the very end!

When I boot the picade, it keeps saying no controller found (I only have a keyboard for now). I continue on with the setup, assigning random console-controller-based keys.
Now that the keys are all screwed up, how can I re-assign them?

More importantly, at the prompt, the instructions have me put in this line:
curl https://get.pimoroni.com/picadehat | bash

With my keyboard layout I can’t find the pipe key! it’s usually with the backslash right above the Enter key, but it’s not there.

I’m almost there - help!
Thanks in advance

Using mote with Retropie/Picade

Has anyone managed to use Mote in Retropie or made it part of their Picade build? I’ve seen other LED lights work. I’d love to but haven’t managed to get Retropie to run a Mote script when it boots up.

Yet another button mapping noob

Ok, I’ve spent hours searching the internet, youtube, and pimoroni forums.
There seems to be no definitive answer as to how to map the bloody buttons.
The instructions seem to end rather abruply after the “…picade | bash…” part.

Can some kind soul please update the following for when I do the “Input Configuration” for the 50th time?
[Picade] [Console Name] [Physical Keyboard Key to hit during configuration]
Joy Up
Joy Down
Joy Left
Joy Right
1
2
3

1up

Thanks so much in advance!
This really should be a sticky somewhere!

Any tips or advice would be great!

No 3.5 mm Headphone Audio

Hi all.
I now have sound (with volume control!) through the speaker.
I’m now trying to get the headphone jack on the pi to work.
I’ve searched everywhere and tried many things, but can’t seem to make it happen.
Changing to headphone in EmulatorStation does nothing.
When I go into raspi-config > advanced > audio, I get “no internal audio devices found”.

What gives?
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks

Picade Plasma buttons - change boot color?

$

Hi!
Im pretty new to the raspberry pi scene, i have no experience with working with scripts and commands from before (MacOS plug&play guy :P)

I have a question about the plasma buttons on the picade.
I’ve installed them and everything seems to work, it boots and i can test out new colors in terminal and so on.
But… how do i change the default colors so that it’s not “rainbow” when booting anymore?

I’ve made my own png and installed it, even tried to replace my png with the default one in /etc folder (by namning mine default).
but that did not work.
I used the file manager inside retropie to do this btw.

Any ideas?
if there is a script that i can run or similar, please write it in full here so i can copy/pase it, like i said, im new to this.
THANKS!

Picade 10" Display Issues (Distortion)

$

My Picade 10" display is distorting the output in most (but not all) cases. The problems started on day one, and I’ve yet to actually use this cool gadget (after two months of intermittent troubleshooting and frustration-inspired-dust-gathering).

Things I’ve tried:

  • replaced ribbon cable from display board to display = no change
  • replaced micro HDMI adapter = no change
  • replaced HDMI cable from display board to Pi = no change
  • replaced driver board = no change
  • connected Pi to a separate external monitor = works great!
  • changed boot/config.txt settings (multiple variations of the suggestions here) = no change

At this point, it seems like the culprit must be the Picade display itself. Connecting the display to my MacBook as a mirrored external monitor (output at 1024×768), and the results are pretty funky:

  • when the MacBook shows the screensaver, the Picade display works as expected.
  • but switching to anything else (in this case, Firefox), and the ouput is distorted.

Connecting the display to my Nintendo Switch, and the output is still distorted.

Using just the Picade as designed, and I experienced similar results: although the display is distorted most of the time, some screens display accurately. Here’s a video showing this in action.

What could I try next? Why would the display work normally sometimes and be distorted other times?

Joystick sensitivity?

$

Sometimes the Picade joystick seems unresponsive and flakey. Like if I’m going “up”, if I go straight to “left” it won’t respond, but if I go to “center” first, “left” works fine. Things like that. It’s not the wiring because this behavior is consistent.

Anyone else have this issue?
Are there are joystick tests or sensitivity settings I can fool with anywhere?

Edit:
It seems to happen mostly on games like Dig Dug and Pac Man. Any of the shooter or fighting games are fine!

I’ve looked around to no avail.

What is the best way to add more controls to the Picade?
Stock, there’s 10 buttons and 1 joystick.
What If I want to add a trackball/more buttons/player 2 controls?

What’s the best way to do this?

Thanks!

Another screwed up cfg file

I was trying to test a minor change to the input configuration for a particular game, using the “tab” menu that comes up when you’re in the game.
Somehow I messed up the video resolution, and it now says “loading override” every time I start the game now (in addition to looking ugly).
I’ve searched and searched, and nothing has worked.
Half the links people have created over the years (“click here to see solution!”) now point to a generic retropie “links have changed” page, so are now useless.

How do I disable/delete/restore this game?

Help!

Picade Joystick Up And Down producing same gpio output

$

I just received my Picade 8" and assembled it with a raspberry pi 4B + original power source.
HDMI/Sound/Buttons/Power Button are all working.

My problem is the joystick is not working correctly. The Joystick UP and DOWN directions are producing the same output in gpio. So when trying to set up the Keys in EmulationStation, I get an error that “Key is already bound” when trying to set up Joystick Down after having set up Joystick Up in the previous step.

Here is a screenshot of the gpio readall output, where I could verify that both GPIO.22 and GPIO.26 are changing when pressing either UP or DOWN.

Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this further?

I already verified that the orientation of the joystick connector on the Picade X Hat is correct. If I reverse the orientation of the connector, I get output for only one single Joystick direction in gpio, and no output for the three other directions.

At the moment I believe either my Joystick or my Picade X Hat must be defect.

Joystick Up doesn't work

I finished building my picade. I installed the drivers for the hat. When I come to the game controller configuration screen. All my buttons work! 3 directions of my Joystick work. The only direction that doesnt work is ‘up’. I have read that the inverse of this is common and you need to flip the joystick connection which I have tried … that only makes the whole joystick non functional. I rechecked the connections. these are simple plugs so they look securely in place. Do i have a faulty joystick or connector?

*edit - I can get the up to work by holding my finger on the joystick connector and firmly pushing up or down… it doesn’t stay put … should i gently bend this connector?

[Install successful !]

Hello, just a few feedback about my Picade 2020 10" assembly.
1/ I follow a video about the 8 inches and I was confused with the 10" because some acrylic parts are not used (TOP 2 part). The screws holes are in front of the screen and it’s normal. They won’t be fit. Don’t panic.
2/ Some nuts / bolts are very difficult to install (side of the cabinet, close to bottom front panel).
3/ I suggest to prepare first the pi before mounting it (because the hat won’t work without the drivers). So, my first step would be to do all the software settings (connect the Pi to a TV).
4/ On the joystick step, when you screw it, I’d suggest to add a small washer because the size of the nut is almost the same than the plate hole. So this washer would add more reliability.

The final render is amazing ! Thank you to Pimoroni.

Just one question : what is the purpose of the toric joins ?

Thank you,

Reset after 20 seconds when PiHat attached

Hi - last night I assembled a brand new 10" Picade but haven’t had much luck getting it to run. My Pi4B runs fine connected to the cab and everything works as it should until I connect the PiHat. Then it boots and resets every 20 seconds or so. If I connect the power to the Pi with the hat attached it will run fine but then the controls aren’t recognised. I’m tearing my hair out here! Does anybody have any ideas?

New Picade poorly done

$

I had the original picade and found the instructions and set up very good. Purchased the newer version on Amazon last December. I found it a bit of a mess to be honest. I successfully put it together and got games working but it was not as smooth an experience as the first PiCade.

Also I went to put a Pi4 in place of my Pi 3 and it suddenly dawned on me that there was no allowance for cooling the Pi4. I found an old post about Pimoroni doing a new Hat with cooling combinded and emailed the poster (jon@pimoroni) but didn’t get a reply.

All in all if there’s further versions of the PiCade I won’t be as quick to purchase.

Keyboard config "OK" not working

$

Hello Picade community,
I have just received my new Picade (rasp 4, 10")
and successfully assembled it following the instructions from the YT film

My sequence of actions:

  1. My screen comes on
  2. Pushing “A” or spacebar, as shown in the video does nothing
  3. I can not get to this screen https://i.imgur.com/Xs2jl3g.jpg

I can select “configure” and see the keyboard configuring questions.
So I have configured most of the relevant keys on a wireless Rii mini x1 keyboard. (Using a microsoft wireless keyboard & mouse combo didn’t work at all for some reason)

Clicking OK doesn’t work. At least: I get no response on screen. I see or hear no signal telling me it has successfully saved. I expect to be moved to the next screen, per the video. Alas, nothing.

The key I configured to “select” was the “returnkey”
The only option out of this screen is F4, which takes me to the cmd line.

(I have tried re-doing the install with Balena etcher and starting from scratch. I had to change the config file and uncomment “hdmi_force_hotplug=1” but that is only for the screen.)

On the cmd line I get a message “wifi is currently blocked by rfkill”

I added a wifikeyfile.txt with my wifi credentials, but that hasn’t changed the rfkill message

Looking online: this forum, retropie.co.uk, has me spinning with all the new technology words & concepts.

Any help is most appreciated,
Jen

Picade 10" screen - cannot get it to work

Hi,
I edited the config file with - hdmi_force_hotplug=1
It still doesn’t work.
It only work if the screen is connected to another power supply.

Plus, after booting the Picade says it doesn’t recognize the button pannel. If I connect a keyboard i can set keyboards button (but not the Picade buttons) and cannot press OK at the end.
I cannot get to the Wifi stage as the video says.
Please assist, this is so frustrating.

Thanks

Compatible UPS HAT with Picade X HAT?

$

I have a Picade with Pi 4 4Gb setup, with retroArch manually installed on top of raspberry pi os.
On top of that, it’s running Home Assistant in docker with a USB zigbee/zwave controler from GoControl.

I’d like to keep it running as uninterruptible as possible, so I am thinking of adding a UPS HAT.
Do you have any recommendations?

I am thinking of pijucice, it’s only using 2 i2c pins and the power supply pins. https://pinout.xyz/pinout/pijuice
Would this work with Picade X HAT?

Picade HAT USB-C (Console) Power Issue

$

Hi all,

I built a Picade Console recently using a Pi4 with an official 5v3a power supply and another non-official 5v3a power supply. When I plug the power into the Pi4 everything works fine. When I plug the power into the Picade Hat it will reboot randomly and/or show the low power symbol.

The instructions say to use the Hat to power the Pi but it can’t seem to do it. I know the supplies are good since they power everything for hours on end when plugged into the Pi4.

I searched through here and most power problems I read were people with screens or questionable power. The console is the one without a screen and my supplies are legit. I put a meter on the power supply pins while plugged into the Hat and powered on. Both were 5v-4.98v under load.

Power management was an advertised feature of this Hat. I’d like to get it working as it is intended. For now I use it plugged into the Pi4 itself with a switch inline. Pressing the power button turns it off but can’t cut the power without being plugged into the hat obviously.

Thanks for any input. I can’t believe I’ve never heard of these things before now. Even if I can’t get the power through the hat working this is a good addition to my retro gaming collection.
