Button problem / New Picade X Hat broken?

$

Hi all,

Two days ago i bought a Picade 10 inch screen model and it was a lot of fun to build! When all was done and i started to map the buttons (RetroPie 4.6) i noticed that button 3, 4, 1UP and Coin did not work. I then rewired all the buttons that did not work to button 1 on the Picade X Hat and they did respond after that, so the buttons and wires are not the problem. I managed to get 1UP and Coin to work when i did not push the connector on the Picad X Hat down all the way for these buttons. Thats weird, isn’t it?

My conclusion is that i got a Picade X Hat with some busted button connectors in my package. Or do anyone have any suggestions to what might be wrong?

If the Picade Hat is broken, what can i do about it? I did not bought this from Pimoroni’s website. The strore that i bought it from do not have new Picade X Hat’s to by separately.

Must i buy a new one?

Any help is appreciated! :)

Thanks!

Magnus Ardhammar / Sweden

(Here is a picture on how the connectors for 1UP and Coin must be to work)

Picade loses shutdown with xboxdrv

Hi,
Hoping this is something simple I have overlooked? I have installed the universal xbox driver (xboxdrv) for my picade-x and it is working great!! except now I have lost the button shutdown capability? I wonder if the xboxdrv has taken over all inputs including this button? Has anyone had experience with this and how do I overcome it so I can get back the shutdown capability while using xboxdrv?
Thanks!
Alex.

Install Picadehat by mistake

I have an older Picade arcade machine and I haven’t used it in a while. I was downloading some saturn games but could’t get them to work so I had to do some changes to retropie to get it to launch. I accidentally installed the PicadeHat software on to my install and now the audio doesn’t work and I get a bar coming up saying Aurduino LLC Arduino Leonardo (9025/32822) not configured and also Audio Samples not found error. Please can someone help me to get it functioning again. My linux knowledge is limited and I hope by removing the PicadeHat software may fix this as my Arcade has a separate board that says Picade on it and is attached to the Pi by USB

New Picade 8" screen white halo

Hi,
I’ve just realised since a couple of days ago there’s a whitening halo around my Picade screen, where the color is definitely washed out comparing the rest of the display. Since the Picade is not even two years old and has not been used that much, I feel quite disappointed and I’ve been wondering:

  • Is this a known issue?
  • What is causing this?
  • Is this covered by any warranty?

Button measurements on top panel

$

Hey all,

I’m working on a tool to generate animations for the plasma kit. I’d like to get some accurate physical measurements for the layout of buttons on the top panel

I’m interested to know the horizontal and veritical distances between the button centres. I’ve made some estimations, but was hoping someone might be able to help me get correct distances:

Panel buttons
                                (*)

                     (*)
       5mm
       ,--(*)
       |
       |                   (*)
  36mm |
       |         (*)
       |          | 13mm
      (*)---------'
            35mm

I’d also like to know the distance between the LEDs on the plasma PCB. I’ve estimated 24mm between opposite LEDs

           .....
       _d^^^^^^^^^b_
    .d''     *     ``b.
  .p'        |        `q.
 .d'    24mm |         `b.
.d'          |          `b.
::           |           ::
:: *-------- | --------* ::
::    24mm   |           ::
`p.          |          .q'
 `p.         |         .q'
  `b.        |       .d'
    `q..     *    ..p'

WIP: Plasmaburn: Create plasma led patterns and animations from templates

$

Hey all,

I’ve been playing with my picade + plasma led buttons and have started a project to generate led animations.

Plasmaburn is a library at the moment that will generate the PNG files to be used by the plasmactl tool

I have put together a sample/demo pack:

test-plasmaburn.zip

Download the zip on your picade to install a selection of demo/sample images:

{
  wget https://plasmaburn.thef.uk/test-plasmaburn.zip ;
  unzip test-plasmaburn.zip ;
  cd test-plasmaburn ;
  sudo bash install.sh
}

This will install the demo patterns using plasmactl
It should load the test-card image. Compare the less on your picade with the pattern on the test card

If that all looks good, try running the demo:

bash demo.sh

If the test-card doesn’t match, plasmaburn can be re-configured to match your button positions and orientation.

Some features so far:

  • Gamma correction for less (needs more work)
  • Button/led orientation configuration
  • Colour palette, RGB and HSV support
  • Transitions using “adjust” and envelopes
  • OpenSimplex noise to create random but looping patterns
  • Button and led geometry for patterns with precise angles (please could someone give me button measurements)

This is very much a work in progress, I’m moving it up to GitHub

A question about cooling with the Picade

$

Hello. I’ve been very interested in the Picade. From what I hear, the Pi 4 gets pretty hot. This wouldn’t usually be a problem since there is a plethora of fans and heat sinks available for it, but the Picade has it’s X HAT on it. I’ve read that you can use a booster header to get the fan shim to fit on there, but I’ve also read that installing the drivers for it will cause the Picade’s audio to not work. That part isn’t really an issue as I would prefer the fan to always be running anyhow. However, I saw a post that said you even have to modify the fan shim to get it working 100% correctly. It also appears that if you use the booster header, the X Hat will rise (obviously) and will no longer correctly align with the back cover. Is there a good way to cool the Picade? I’m already on edge about purchasing it because of the price of it and posts on this forum talking about bleeding displays and awful instructions, but having no proper way to cool it easily would be my breaking point.

Picade Power Switch LED Won't Light

I finished the assembly of my 8" Picade with my Raspberry Pi 4B. All is well except the power switch LED will not light.

The switch shuts down and starts the Picade fine but won’t light. I have made sure all the terminals are correctly attached to the switch (red to + and black to -) and to the HAT (red connector in terminal closest to screen).

Anyone else had this problem?

Hi All.

I have just built and am enjoying my PIcade…However I wanted to run retropie via Buster on a RPI 4…however when I do the Audio Device has no software volume control within Buster…when I access retropie…I cannot change the volume as it says the audio device is disabled or not found… The volume is then much too loud!!

Does anybody else have this problem and is there a way around it other than just installing the Retropie image?

Many Thanks

Upgrade the Buttons on Picade

$

I would like to upgrade the buttons on my daughter’s second generation Picade. The current buttons stick a lot and don’t really have that arcade feel. I would like to upgrade the joystick as well if possible.
Ideally I would like to add illuminated buttons but I would settle for a higher quality button kit. Any suggestions on which buttons would fit the smaller Picade would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks

I broke the ribbon cable attached to the 10 inch picade screen. It was the gold connector on the screen end, is there a way to salvage it and still use it? Or is a replacement needed?

10" with RetroPie 4.6 screen starts, emustation does not

$

Hey all!

I’ve just finished building my Picade and I’m starting off with RetroPie 4.6

I edited the /boot/config.txt file to set force_hdmi_hotplug=1

After starting for the first time, I can see text in the boot console, but it seems as if emustation doesn’t start.

I jumpes to the console [alt+f4] and ran the installer:

curl https://get.pimoroni.com/picadehat | bash

Let that install complete and rebooted.

I can see the text boot log, but then the screen blanks and stays lit
If I alt+f4 it switches back to a prompt but re-running emustation leaves a blank screen again

Not found any pointers yet, but was hoping I might find some ideas here

Picade assistance - Manchester

$

Hi all, I’ve recently bought a 10" Picade with a Raspberry Pi4. I’m experiencing issues with no display and the arcade buttons not being recognised. I’ve researched all the topics and tried for a couple of days to get this up and running but to no avail. I am quickly losing interest in the Picade which is a real shame as I have wanted one for so long now, but have just got frustrated with my lack of progress. I am not sure if this is allowed but is there anyone in the Manchester area I could take it to to get everything working as it should? I would obviously pay for the time spent on the Picade.

Many Thanks and please remove if not allowed.

Original Picade Console vs New

Can someone tell me the differences between the original Picade console and the newest edition? I know the new one is compatible with the Pi4 but other than that are there any differences?
I am looking to pick up a Picade Console but I saw the original online for much cheaper. I am just wondering if it’s worth picking up the old one for like $30 cheaper?

Thanks

Picade 8" - Great unit - Have some questions about screen, power, audio, etc

$

0

First off, love this unit. I’m running RetroPie and a PI4 and it’s great.

First Question - Does the screen OSD actually save the settings? Is there a way to do this programatically? I think the ansers are no, and no, but seems odd to have an OSD for the screen and yet never save the settings (like a monitor).

Second Question - When I press the power on (side of case) it takes about 6 seconds before I see any activity/lights come on from inside the unit. What’s it’s doing and why the delay. I would expect that the side power would just light up immediately, but, it seems like it’s not working, but then 5-6 seconds later, it will light up, and I’ll see lights come on inside the unit. Anyone else notice this? Is this normal?

Third Question - Has only gotten the N64 emulator to work using the stick with analog emulation? I’ve seen posts about how to do it, and I’ve tried a few things, but I feel like I’m just throwing darts, since I have no idea what some of these posts are talking about. Does anyone have a retroarch.cfg for the N64 that works with the picade?

Fourth Question - I created a HELP png and I’m trying to figure out how to best utilize this. ie, if I hand this to someone, they are not going to know where start/select/coin/a/b/x/y, etc are located (without playing around). So I thought it would be nice if I could boot into emulation station with a custom collection with a single “HELP” selection that show help to someone before they start playing around. Has anyone done anything similar?

Some things that I have figured out, and I’d be willing to share if anyone is interested.

  • Adjust the volume in a game using Hotkey + Stick Up/down
  • Turn off all bezels for everything, since, on the 4/3 display, I found that it was obscuring the game area in most cases. It is tedious to do this per core, so I turned it off system wide
  • Have the background music play at a different volume than the game play

I’ve really been enjoying setting this up, and hoping that others can help me figure out some other things.

Powering the screen via USB to start initially off

$

Hi all!

Ever since the pi 4 came out, I’ve been thinking of making a 2 player Picade with screens back to back utilizing the two video outputs (ala the old battleship game). What I would want to do is have the player 2 screen not turn on until I would need hit the power button on it (so that way at least 1 player can still play with it).

So I would like to know if I would be able to power a screen via usb and have the screen (and audio) off until I hit the power button to turn it on.

Thanks for help!
