PicadeX Stereo solution?

$

Hi,

I have my original PiCade with the old Picade board that had stereo outputs. I bought a PiCadeX to upgrade the PiCade to a Pi4 and have just noticed that this only supports mono output. I’d like to retain the stereo output to both speakers if possible and wondered if anyone had any suggestions?

Thanks
Simon

Is there any way to put two Picade X HATs on the same Raspberry Pi? Wanting to do a multi-player setup with the Picade joystick and buttons without having to use one of the USB ports to have a cleaner appearance.

Hi. I’m a complete novice with this but have put the 10 inch Picade together and can’t seem to get the screen to turn on.

I have amended the config file to power the screen but although it looks to be getting power, It doesn’t appear to be turning on.

I’ve attached a photo of my set up if that might help?

Any advice much appreciated. Thanksimage

Picade X HAT sound volume too high

$

I have the nice picade x hat USB C connected to a R Pi 4B.
It is in that nice Cabinet with the 10" screen.

I am running Raspbian GNU/Linux 10, fully updated.
Retropi fully updated (now will work from console and not just from the desktop).

I have reinstalled the picade script with the curl command.
My /etc/asound.conf is the one the picade script installed.

The sound works, but it is too loud.

I see errors about
lv:10: Volume control::init() - Failed to find mixer elements!

alsamixer shows the sound device as
snd_rpi_hifiberry_dac

This sound device does not have any controls.

i2s is disabled in /boot/config.txt
and there are no dtoverlay= and dacs
only
dtoverlay=picade

I can turn the audio off with dtoverlay=picade, noaudio

But I would like to be able to change the volume someother way, preferably to reduce it.
Could just stuff something over it to muffle it but that seems crude!

I have read around and am confused about the different versions of the hats etc.

Can anyone confirm that they have some sort of volume control with this hat?

Thanks

10" with RetroPie 4.6 screen starts, emustation does not

$

Hey all!

I’ve just finished building my Picade and I’m starting off with RetroPie 4.6

I edited the /boot/config.txt file to set force_hdmi_hotplug=1

After starting for the first time, I can see text in the boot console, but it seems as if emustation doesn’t start.

I jumpes to the console [alt+f4] and ran the installer:

curl https://get.pimoroni.com/picadehat | bash

Let that install complete and rebooted.

I can see the text boot log, but then the screen blanks and stays lit
If I alt+f4 it switches back to a prompt but re-running emustation leaves a blank screen again

Not found any pointers yet, but was hoping I might find some ideas here

Getting First Game Working

Hi All, I’ve built the lasted Picade 8" Pi4 version and am satisfied that the hardware works correctly. It has Emulation station, again the Pi4 build. Ive setup the buttons in emulation station. I used the forum links to upload 3 free arcade games.

Once selected, it displays the following message and drops back to the menu. I’m missing something that must be blindingly obvious to someone - but not me!

My picade is displaying a mirrored screen. I believe it is hardware, b/c both the retropie and screen icons when pushing buttons are mirroring. My colleague and I both built the picades from the same batch, but his is normal and mine is mirrored.

Picade 4 Console HDMI Audio not working

Hey guys and girls,

I’ve just built a Picade console and installed retropie with no problems, the HDMi audio works fine while playing a boot up video until I guess the X-Hat drivers load in and then the audio is only coming from the onboard speaker?

I’ve tried everything within the build of retropie that I have but as I say once the boot video finishes and enters emulationstation no more audio from HDMI!

Help!

Atari 800 and Picade joystick

I can’t get the Picade joystick to work with the lr_atari800 emulator. I’ve read the docs and know you need to bind the port (1?) to Atari Joystick but no joy.
I can get it to work if I use an external controller - DS4 over Bluetooth - but want to have the picade joystick working.
I’ve read other posts and see that it’s a tricky issue but nowhere can I see the answer?
Thanks!

Not detecting joystick or buttons-pi4/usb c picade hat board

$

Hi,

I brought a picade arcade kit of ebay but it didn’t come with a raspberry pi. So I brought a new pi4 and a new picade hat usb c board and built it. I have downloaded the latest retropie 4.6 and run that and have updated everything on there. I installed the picade hat driver and have checked the following:

  • Make sure /boot/overlays/picade.dtbo exists: Checked and it does
  • Make sure dtoverlay=picade is in /boot/config.txt: checked and it does
  • Check dmesg output for any glaring errors: Tried to but text goes by too fast. Is there a way to display one page at a time?
  • Check that /etc/udev/rules.d/10-picade.rules exists : Checked and it does

I then tried the following:

  • drop to terminal from ES by hitting F4 (you will need a keyboard!)
  • install wiringpi for the gpio utility: sudo apt install wiringpi
  • run watch -n 0.1 gpio readall to watch your GPIO status
  • hit some buttons, twiddle the joystick (slowly, 0.1 is a tenth of a second so any action <0.1s may not be visible) and see if anything changes

But it comes up with model of board not recognised or similar

I have tried reseating the picade hat board and it works because I have my usb power cable attached to the picade hat board. My adapter is 3A.

It comes up saying configure controls so I press Alt on my usb keyboard but then when I try and press the joystick up nothing happens. I feel I am close to getting it to work but does anyone have any other suggestions I can try?

Any help greatfully received

Steve

Hotkeys / Button mapping issues

$

Hi guys,

I have purchased and built my very own picade a few days ago. I really had fun with it and it was pretty easy to assemble (although the printed manual was a bit imprecise at some points). All in all i am really happy with the product.

To my question (which is not picade-specific): After firing up, I installed the scripts and configured the PiHAT, which also worked. In Emulation Station you can set a hotkey to e.g. save, exit and so on. Since i used a premade image I installed things on top. But some of the keys aren’t working as intend. For example the button which simulates the ESC key will always exit the game, no matter what i map to it in ES.
I guess there is some override in place which has higher priority than ES button mapping…also my hotkey doesn’t do what it should. But where does this come from? Can it be that the premade image has configured hotkeys in Retroarch which override my settings. How can I disable or change them? Or is it something completely different? Any help is appreciated!

Best, Chris / ch40s

Picade + RPi4 = WiFi not working :(

$

So I started a thread on the RetroPie forum but after yet more investigation is seems to be something physical - but I can’t see what :S

In summary…

RPi3 + Picade HAT + Picade 8" = WORKING
RPi4 + Picade HAT = WORKING
RPi4 + Picade HAT + Picade 8" = WiFi won’t obtain IP address, but scan and signal strength return OK

Now, I’ve also tried lots of different configurations. I have 3 images I’ve used - Vanilla Buster Lite, PxlTbl (a working image from a very similar project I have, laser-cut case, 7" screen, pimoroni audio hat). I have an RPi3 and 2 RPi4s.

All the Pis work with all the other images and I’ve not got/had any issues with WiFi. I’ve rebooted all my network equipment, it’s quite a complicated setup but it’s all DrayTek business class stuff (I’m a DrayTek authorised reseller).

If I put the Picade hat on the RPi4 and leave on my desk - it works. If I assemble everything, just can’t get WiFi to work well enough to obtain an IP via DHCP. Assigning a fixed IP doesn’t solve the problem, I still can’t ping or send traffic. If I rebuild it with a RasPi3 - everything works just fine.

Any ideas?

Hi, I have the original Picade, with a Pi2 which I want to now upgrade. I will be getting the new 10’ Screen and a PI4 + power supply.

Will I need to purchase anything else in order for everything to work correctly? Or should I be good to go.

Many thanks

Picade 10inch build experience

$
0
0

Recently got a 10inch Picade for my birthday and figure it might be useful to document the build and setup experience with issues I encountered and how I resolved them.

  • First impressions were very good, packaging super well organised and everything packed neatly
  • Except my joystick, came with 3 pins bent a good 45 degrees. I straightened them with pliers, seem to be working ok
  • Was initially worried when I saw the panels until I realised I was looking at the internal side which doesn’t have the same powder/paint coverage as the external. Actually thought it was mouldy at first!
  • Instructions are OK but not great, things get a little confusing around building the screen (I don’t think it ever mentions using screens for the bottom of the 10inch screen?)
  • Video “instructions” weren’t super useful, some well numbered and chaptered step by step video and web based instructions would be helpful (I recently built a Prusa SL1 and the step by step instructions are very good)
  • Not a fan of the dupont connecters for the X-Hat, they’ve got too much wiggle and at one point when debugging it turned out 2 of the joystick connectors just weren’t seated quite right
  • Could really do with some panel connectors were you can seat the nuts without needing to do that hand yoga in the underside of the console to screw those damned side screws in!
  • Had to lube 2 of my console buttons, they kept sticking when depressed
  • The position of the LCD driver board is far too close to the connector of the LCD. I ended up popping the wee ribbon connector latch off into the abyss trying to debug why the screen wasn’t coming on (does that tab even work from the other side of the connector?). Turns out the bend caused by the close proximity of the two connectors with a ribbon too long for the distance was making the connection a little loose - it’s been duct taped in place and works fine now
  • I’ve used a Raspberry Pi 4, but it doesn’t seem to auto detect the correct resolution of the LCD? not quite sure what it was autodetecting as resolution but after a while I noticed things were a little bunched up low res in the menus so I forced the correction resolution in my /boot/config.txt setting hdmi_group 2 and hdmi_mode 16 (1024x768 60hz) screen became immediately sharper
  • I have some noticeable light bleed in the top right and bottom right of my screen, worst in the bottom right
  • I followed the instructions to setup the HAT using “curl https://get.pimoroni.com/picadehat | bash”. Worked for the power button and sound but the button config caused some major problems. I’d setup my button configuration in emulation station and then when I went into a Libre based emulator that configuration seemed to just be completely ignored. I ended up manually configuring my /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg for input_player1 with information I found on this forum about what the button mapping should be (Picade button mapping issues)

Hopefully that information will be helpful - Overall I really like the Picade, my kids are getting a kick out of playing some classic arcade games now, but I don’t think I could recommend it to anyone that doesn’t have a decent amount of maker experience and a willingness to potentially macgyver a few solutions.

Plasma Button Upgrade + 10 Inch RPI3 compatibility?

$

Hello RPI Fans!

I ordered my 10 Inch picade today + 10 button plasma Button Upgrade.

This combination should work fine because of X-Hat USB-C (with plasma button connector).

Can this button upgrade be used for the 8inch Version too ?

Another question please: 10inch Picade should work (because GPIO Pins are 1:1) with RPI3b or 3b+ too ? X-HAT must be powered with USB-C, internally everything should work as expected, slower but compatible ?

br Harald
