Powering Picade X with battery pack

I’ve been having challenges with using battery packs to power the Picade. It needs 5V 3A, but none of the 3 battery packs I’ve tried output 3A over USB A, leading to the lightning bolt. But it powers up.

When I connect USB C to USB C, I get no power. It’s like the battery doesn’t recognize that the Picade is connected.

I’ve tried different USB C cables and batteries, with no luck. Has anyone solved this?

I’m using the PiCade X, with a Pi 3B, and the 10" PiCade.

Dear Bucaneers,

I have just received my Picade console and have 2 issues. 1 is that the picade hat was not included in the package which i have already contacted pimoroni for this. The second is shown in the picture. There is no space for the usb C wire. The rpi port is almost flush with the back panel. I am doing something wrong?

I just received the new 10" USB -C Picade kit. I have a lot of Retropie content and since Retropie is not ready for the PI4, I was wondering is it possible to temporarily downgrade the kit to use an RP3. Would I need to locate a new X HAT for Rp3 or maybe the pi and XHAt could be powered separately? Would the cabling work? Still learning about HATs.

Picade Hat installation locking out keyboard

I am trying to install a pre-made SD card into the Picade. I also have a second different Retropi image SD and it works fine in the Picade so there is nothing wrong with the hardware. On the new SD I had to remap the keyboard on the card using localization from UK to English US and US region. It seems to have worked shows en_US.UTF8 and layout ‘us’ and PC 105 generic KB and the keyboard keys and the pipe symbol work fine. Then I try to run the PicadeHAT install script and afterwards it locks out the keyboard. Keys no longer work afterwards. I imagine the install script is doing some remapping? Also the SD image itself is Stretch… Does the script work under stretch? Is there an approach I can take to get drivers installed without screwing up the keyboard?

I installed the drivers: “curl -sS https://get.pimoroni.com/picadehat | bash” and nothing … under retropie nothing … I despair. Can you help me ? thank you.

Controlling the recorder

Every time I hit my select button, the picade starts recording. I don’t need those recordings. Not only is play choppy once it starts recording and I must go back and turn it off, but I am concerned it will soon fill my SD card. I am not posting replays nor making game vignettes.

Is there an easy way to disconnect the recording function from the button or shut it down so that incidental use of the button does not start recording?

Dodgy Kickstarter PCB?

@photek wrote:

Ahoy!

So, one of the few benefits of Coronavirus is that I finally have time to get around to sorting out all the things that got filled under “more or less works, will finalise it later” :-)

One such issue is my Kickstarter vintage Maxi Picade, in general, it works…apart from the sound…which also “generally works”. However, there’s a constant hiss/hum/static. I’ve tried all the usual tricks:

  • Move speaker cables away from everything
  • Shielded audio cable
  • Take the audio from HDMI, not direct from Pi
  • audio dither option & max_usb_current=1 in the config.txt
  • played with the ALSA mixer

All that makes diddly squat difference. So today, it got serious (by my tame standards) :

  1. I disconnect everything from the picade board;
  2. Removed it from the cabinet;
  3. Connected the psu and one speaker… - same issue, hissing;
  4. tried the other speak - same issue…hissing;
  5. swapped the cables around…hissing.

I’m coming to the conclusion the board has some hardware issue, looking at the photos - is there anything obvious I can do? Some dodgy-looking connections?

Cheers!

David,

Link two picade consoles

@sergiosalvado wrote:

Hi. I would like to know if it’s possible to link two picade consoles, in order to enable a second player.
I want the possibility for both my kids to play, each with his own console, but I want them to play together.
My question is:
One console has to be “master” (the one that connects to the TV) and the other is linked to this one just to provide the controls for the second player ?
Or both consoles can have its own raspberry pi, so each one can play solo, or multiplayer (when linked together) when they want to ?
Is this even possible ?
Thanks.

Better way to config the Arcade Buttons?!

$

@Nahual wrote:

Why hello there everyone!
I’ve decided to finally order me (and my kids) a Picade to pass time, my wife and I got all put together and all. I already had a Raspberry Pi 3 with Retropie installed and a bunch of games already installed.

But when I go to configure the joystick and buttons for whatever reason it’s reading them like weird keys on a keyboard. (Yes I know that the picade controls are pretty much a keyboard)

But if I press lets say the first left corner button to be A it shows I’m pressing KEY LEFT CONTROL as shown on the picture below.

So I didnt think much of it but if I try to play ANY game, specially old arcade fighting games like Street Fighter, none of the buttons work except for Weak Punch and Weak Kick and somehow they are the two buttons in the middle :(

So I said ok… weird but ok!
I went into RetroArch and decided to map them like that BUT that overrides the existing keyboard I have already mapped in order to navigate into Retropie settings.

Is there a better or official way to map the buttons of the Picade to work correctly?
I thank you all in advanced for taking the time to read this.

Does Amiga Emulation even work on Picade?

@gizmo1990 wrote:

I’ve been attempting this for a number of days and I’m rapidly coming to the conclusion that it simply is not possible. Although I readily admit, I’m stumbling around in the dark due to a lack of knowledge on my part and a scarcity of information on the subject.

It all seems to stem from the Picade’s use of GPIO for its controls and treating them as keyboard input. Amiberry just does not seem to be able to see the controls.

Has anyone been able to setup Amiga emulation on their picade? And if so could you detail how you achieved this? Perhaps a mod could help out too, since I’m sure there must be many others who would wish to emulate an Amiga on their picades.

Has anyone successfully installed Pico8 on their Retropie Picade?

I’ve been trying but no luck, therea re not many tutorials out there and the few I’ve found, are not very clear on what to do or how the scripts work.

I’m a indie game developer, I’d like to create something for it and play it on my Picade, any suggestions? Does anyone have a video tutorial?

Thank you!

@ZombieMedia wrote:

Hi hi,

So we recently finished building the 10" Pi (there have been a few teething problems getting the controls to work properly, but that’s not relevant any more!).

The little doohickey (technical term) that is the USB-C connection on the hat has broken off.

Any advice on what we can do to fix it? Kind of gutted that it’s broken so quickly :/

Cheers.

Issues (sound + controller) with Picade 10 inch

$

Hello everyone,

Apologies if my questions are dumb - i’m new at this :).

I just built a 10 inch Picade and I’m facing couple of issues:

  1. Sound related - in some emulators such as the ones for nes , mame the output sound is crippled. Works ok in psp, SNES, or if I am to play media files with vlc. Any ideas for me to try.

  2. Controller related - how can I have the analog controls mapped through the joystick, at the same time with the D-pad? The joystick does not work with some games as analog controls are expected and the joystick is set for the d ones

Thanks for your help,

Adrian

Old 2016 Picade PCB with Pi4

$

Hi guys,

I’m looking to upgrade the pi3b in my old 2016/2017 Picade.

I know the new X Hat is the recommended way to go, but it doesn’t support stereo output, which I really want to maintain.

I was therefore wondering if I can still use the original PCB that came with my kit with a new pi4?

Any advice would be really appreciated.

2016 Picade PCB with an Android box?

$

I’m all questions on here today!
As you can see from some of my other posts, I’m looking to make some upgrades to my 2016 Picade which has so far served me well.

I’ve been looking into swapping out my pi3B for a pi4, but I’m begining to wonder if replacing it with an Emuelec compatible Android box might be a decent alternative.

With that in mind I was wondering if the Picade PCB could work as an amplifier and USB controller board for an Android box like this?

As before, all advice really appreciated.

Picade X HAT micro-USB vs. USB C

Hi, I would like to upgrade my Pi from 3+ to 4 and keep my Picade X HAT micro-USB. Besides the port itself, is there is difference between the X HAT micro-USB and USB C? The latter mentions that power is 3A while the former is 2.5A: can I use a 3A micro-USB power supply with the older X HAT? Thanks.

Picade X Hat: additional buttons

$

Hi,
I have the first version of the Picade cabinet that came with the old Picade HAT but I upgraded it to a recent Pi 4 and the new Picade X Hat. The old cabinet had 2 additional buttons (for volume) that are not in the more recent, smaller version (i.e., 12 buttons instead of 10). Can I somehow wire them all to the Picade X Hat and use the additional two? If so, how? Thanks!
