Picade sound settings

$

Hi All, I have just finished building my Picade Console,

I’ve purposely left the speaker disconnect as I run the system though a TV, and thought it would be easy to enable system sound through the HMDI rather than the little speaker.

I’ve changed some of the parameters in the configuration.txt file but I’m that makes no difference.

Does anyone know how to enable sound through the HMDI rather than the system speaker?

Installing Picade X HAT USB-C Speaker Wires

$

I’m having a hard time getting the speaker wires installed into the Pimoroni Picade X HAT USB-C into the SPKR terminals. The instructions say to “gently press the clips on the speaker terminals” but the wire doesn’t ever seem to “catch”. You can see where I’ve pressed too hard in the following picture.

Am I pressing the clips in the wrong area? I am pressing where there is a small divot on the white part of terminal. In fact I think I broke the terminal from pressing too hard. Can someone please help?

Picade 10" with 1TB SSD and power issues

Hi,

I have a Picade 10" with Raspberry Pi 4 (4GB) (Jan 2021 firmware) and a Samsung 870 QVO SSD 1TB connected via a Sabrent USB 3.1 (Type-A) to SSD adaptor.

The Raspberry Pi power supply was fine when using an SD card but as soon as I introduce the SSD there isn’t enough power to boot, if I supply the screen and Pi with separate power then everything boots.

I am interested if other people have had similar issues and what they have done to resolve.

I can supply the unit from two power supplies or a power supply bank with two cables as an option, or I do have an option to power the SSD from another power supply source, all would work.

The single power supply bank with two cables seems a good choice.

Any thoughts?

No USB keyboard, can I use a bluetooth keyboard?

Hi, have dusted off my PiCade after a couple of years and updated to a clean install of the latest retropie.
Looking to perform the initial setup again, but I no longer have a USB keyboard so can’t connect to wi-fi, set key mappings etc. Can I use a separate bluetooth keyboard right away in place of the USB equivalent to do this, if I put the BT receiver into one of the spare USB slots on the Pi?

Cheers,
Paul

Sound config, original Picade

Hi, can anyone tell me what the sound settings should be for the original Picade (the one with the volume buttons at the left hand side of the cabinet)?

I have upgraded to the latest version of retro pie and the sound doesn’t seem to work anymore.

The emulation station options have the audio card as either Default, Sysdefault, Dmix, HW, PlugHW and Null. Then Audio Device is either PCM, hdmi, headphone, speaker, master, digital, analogue.

Which of these combinations is correct? There seems to have been more than previous versions of retro pie?

The games are loading ok just that there’s no sound anymore

Recalbox or Retropie? + Pi4 or stick with 3B?

$

Hi guys - I am new to the forum and have seen some great stuff (especially the picade custom artwork!) and will receive my new 8inch Picade tomorrow.

I’ve done some research as need to get prepping but have two quick questions:

  1. The picade comes with a pi3B installed, but if I want to upgrade this what pi4 should i go for and is that a relatively easy upgrade for me? seeing comments about fans/overheating etc and it’s putting me off as I’d like to keep it as simple as possible.
  2. Recalbox or Retropie - again for simplicity which would you recommend?

Sorry for the questions but didn’t want to put multiple posts out! Thanks in advance guys.

Sound issue with early Picade hardware after RetroPie upgrade

$

Hello,
I bought an early version of the Picade back in December 2015.
After many years without an issue, I thought that it was time to upgrade to the latest RetroPie version, as the legacy Raspbian Stretch is no more maintained.
Everything went smoothly except for one single issue which I have not been able to solve, even after spending a few hours testing it in many ways: my Picade delivers no sound anymore!
The issue is not only with RetroPie but a general one. Fors instance omxplayer can play a mp3 file but no sound exits from the speakers connected to the headphone jack on the Picade hat.
My guess is that the issue has something to do with the Picade hat and sound drivers in Buster.
My model is a blue one and connects via USB.

Did anyone here face the same no sound issue, and by chance found a fix for upgrading these early Picade versions to the latest Raspbian Buster based RetroPie?

Thanks,
aldweb

Problem with Sound on Picade X hat

$

Howdy…

I installed Retropie and it works fine, I can adjust the sound and the games have sound.
Once I tested it, I added the Picade X hat and installed it with the following command,
curl https://get.pimoroni.com/picadehat | bash
The joystick and buttons works without problems but there is no sound.

I get a “lvl0: VolumeControl::init() - Failed to find mixer elements!” error when starting a game.
I tried the Raspi-Config and Audio setting and it tells me “No internal audio devices found.”.

I would like to play the sound through HDMI and saw a note about a script that would force HDMI output so I tried the following,
curl https://get.pimoroni.com/audio | bash
And selected option 3.
There is still no sound and no internal audio devices found.

I don’t need the sound output on the Picade X Hat so is there a way to disable it and get the HDMI sound output?

Picade Joystick goes down repeatedly

Sometimes the joystick goes down repeatedly, as if the switch gets stuck. Just touch it in another direction and it stops.
However, it is very annoying and often causes problems during games. Did any of you happen?

If this has a 4:3 screen how do I get it to be full screen on retro arcade roms? It is always in a small window in the middle of the screen with bezels on the side. Driving me crazy If a game was not a smup and had a regular monitor shouldn’t it fill the entire 4:3 screen???

How to configure MAME controls correctly?

$

I just recently finished putting together the Picade 10" on a Pi 3B+. I an existing updated Rasbian install so I manually installed Retropie on that. After finally getting sound working the next problem I have is with the controls inside MAME. I’m using lr-mame2003 as the emulator. I have no idea what’s going on the with the controls – they seem all over the place and even changed on me.

So the first problem I had was the controls were triggering the extra options (like screen record and fast-forward). So was able to edit the retroarch.conf and map those to commands to different keys. The second problem seems to the buttons not mapped to what I expect and opening the MAME menu, etc. The third problem is that the controls don’t seem to work right. Some responsiveness problems.

I noticed that MAME seems to detect the controls as RetroPad as well as a keyboard and that’s causing some conflict. Does that make sense? What is the best way to get the Picade working with MAME?

Picade 10" - Dedicated Exit/Reset Buttons

$

I built my Picade 10" kit with zero issues. It’s working great but there’s one thing I haven’t been able to figure out.

Is there any way to map the buttons on the left and right of the cabinet to exit and reset the game? I have it set up currently with the left button (Esc, I think) acting as a hotkey, but I would like to simplify it by having no hotkey and a single button to exit and a single button to reset.

I know this is probably a very simple issue to fix, but I’ve been searching for a while and not had any luck locating a solution. Any help would be much appreciated. :)

Edit: Reading on another site I realised that the issue I was having with the left side button not exiting emulators was because I’d mapped it as the hotkey in ES. My right side button still does nothing though, so is there a way to map this to reset or other functions?

1080p screen?

$

Hi does anybody know if a 1080p screen (of the right size) would work in the Picade or at least what the problems of using one I might face? I’ve seen plenty of 1080p screens on ebay of roughly the right size.

The reason why is that 5x integer scaling seems to be the holy grail of retro LCD gaming (Obviously retropie would need to support clipping down to 1080p and a custom offset).

Thanks

Sound issues

Just built the picade 8 usbc with a pi4b all super smooth until I tried to get the speaker in the unit to work, retropie says onboard audio disabled or not present and it won’t let me go any further.

Sound settings via the overlay are
System volume: 52
audio card: default
Audio device: pcm
Omx player audio device: ALSA

I’m a new pi user and just Learning but finding it super frustrating as nothing I try seems to work.

What's needed to upgrade 2018 picade to Pi4?

$

Hi everyone.

As per the title, I’d like to upgrade my 2018 picade (pi 3B) to use a pi 4. Other than purchasing a Picade X HAT USB-C and a new power supply is there anything else I need? For instance will all the leads just plug in as normal? Will the Picade X HAT fit the support holes in the picade etc?

Any advice much appreciated.
