Picade Easy Volume Control

@longjohn119 wrote:

New to the forum and just got a 10" Picade I’m still setting up. I’ve seen some discussion about not having a volume control and the simplest solution to that is us an L-pad like seen on higher end speakers to control a tweeter or mid-range

Cons: A bit bulky (Shouldn’t be a problem here though) and a bit expensive (Although you may be able to scavenge one from old speakers for free)

Pros: Super easy to implement and easy to use, works like a normal input volume control

Basically they are 2 low ohm pots wired and mechanically arranged so as to always present a constant 8 ohm load to the amplifier yet function as a volume cut. I just happen to have a couple I bought for a buck apiece when Radio Shark sold out so that’s what is going in mine yet tonight

Retropie, Buster and RPI4 nightmare!

@BigG wrote:

Heads up - the Picade is absolutely great - as is the RPi 4. It seems that they dont get on too well with Retropie…

Really pulling my hair out - have a open day at school - wanted to show retropie on Piarcade along with some games my students have made - so brought one - only to find that Retropie doesn’t work on RPI4.
“There are workarounds” I hear you cry such as https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5Pz60iHtL8 - with heaps of updated posts and “New” approaches on the way there. I don’t even know if this is the latest thinking or is reliant on some version of something somewhere. Nothing works so far - errors - “Cant install” and so forth.
To be fair I am trying to make retropie work on top of Buster - so I can demo a few other things as well and not be tied solely to retropie.
So im going to try https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=maIkw23r-N4 - and use a huge image that purports to work.
Will probably end up using Buster - with the Pimoroni Picade hat installed and manually set up playing the games that my students have put together.
My point is Pimoroni - could you write an article explaining the situation and any possible workarounds. At the moment - the investment in the arcade has been a bad one - based on poor information. Don’t get me wrong -its a fantastic piece of kit - I cant wait to get it up and running. Seems like I’m going to have to wait until Retropie release a Buster RPi4 compatible version though.
Wish I had known and not blown the weekend going nowhere…

More and more Control problems

@Catfoot wrote:

Hi folks,

I recently finished my Picade and tried first to install latest version of Retropie on one new SD-card. The buttons and joystick was never identified as “Keybord” in Emulation station after the online installation of drivers OR which ever step from advices in forums that I took and therefore it could never be configured.

I formatted and made a new fresh installation on the same SD but with the same result.
I bought a new SD and made a fresh installation on this with exactly the same result.
I now downloaded the update from Github and made at local installation and… tada! All the controls were now possible to configure in the Emulation station!

BUT…

Starting the first ROMs in mame, the joystick and buttons are no responsive! When i try to configure the control in mame, it seems that that all inputs are right pre configured though I can’t reconfigure them.

Maby it’s a problem that could be adressed the Liberto Mame I thought

BUT…

unfortunally not, as I now tried NES ROMs as well and the controls doesn’t work there either.

PLEASE! Give me some ideas or advice what to do???

AND - Why are all theese problems? All people buying the Picadehat and RPI3B+ (as in my case) installing the latest Retropie should get the same problems as me, right?? But this doesn’t seem to be the case?

Old Picade Kit with new Picade x HAT

Hello fellow Picade-ans, hope you are all well.

Been following the new updated Picade kit and am especially interested in the new X Hat which comes with the (sorely) missing “solderless” power button and GPIO power-up solution that the original Picade PCB didn’t have.

As such I am considering ordering the new X HAT + new wiring loom and converting my old Picade to new X Hat goodness.

As anyone here had this experience?

Thanks All.

More Screen Problems

@longjohn119 wrote:

Not only is it mirrored and the workaround doesn’t mirror the mouse I’m also having problems running any kind of USB thumb drive or SSD … Anytime it accesses the drive the screen power shuts down and plugging it into it’s own power source fixes the problem but I also noticed it is drawing between .87 and .99 amps which leaves no headroom for anything else because the Pi is limited to 1.2 amps total on the USB

Will the Hack Header 5 V connections handle 1 amp of current to supply the display with power instead of using the USB ports so I can get external storage to work?

Picade display issue. No video/bad display

@pat_pending wrote:

I just finished building a Pimoroni Picade Cabinet Kit - 10" Display (PIM469) unfortunately it looks like the screen or HDMI driver board is defective.

I’m pretty sure the assembly is correct (picture attached) to make sure I haven’t done anything stupid in the connection.

some facts:

  • Running off an 18w USB-C power supply from iPhone 11Pro. I have also tried running the screen alone from a 2.1w USB power supply.
  • Screen backlight turns on once the raspberry pi boot up. Power light on the driver board comes on too.
  • Screen backlight turns off after about 10 secs. Power can be turned on again with the control board tactile switched but again, turns off after 10 secs.
  • Screen Menu and L/R buttons on the control board do nothing.
  • I have tried booting the raspberry pi connecting to a different HDMI monitor and the raspberry Pi and retroPi image is OK.

Please could you advise what I could try?

Thanks,
Pat

Clear Acrylic Front and Side Panels for Artwork?

@gizmo1990 wrote:

Has anyone suggested that Pimoroni manufacture some of these? I’d like to create some artwork for my picade but feel it would be fairly pointless without being able to achieve a satisfactory finish. Ie, having some clear acrylic to go over the artwork and hold it in place.

It should be a fairly easy proceedure for Pimoroni to do a run of these(exactly the same schematics) and make them available to buy. I’d certainly pay £10+ for the convenience.

Has this come up before? Or am I going to have to get out my router…!

Picade built but nothing happens

@BoredVideoGamer wrote:

So I finally built my Picade with a 10 inch screen and raspberry pi 3b+. Only thing is the power adapter I got before hand is micro USB and not USB c. My phone charger is USB c to USB so I used that but when I plugged it into the picade and tried to boot it up nothing happened. No lights, nothing on screen, nothing to indicate any life. My question is, is it the power supply? Do I need a proper USB c power supply and not just a charger lead with an adapter? Or is it the power button thats the problem? Or could it be the x hat on the pi itself may not be connected properly? Any help will be much appreciated

Overclocking Picade, but undervoltage

$

@Edu wrote:

Hi,

I got a 10” Picade a little while ago, and I’m very happy with it. However, I now want to overclock my Pi 4.

I got hold of a Zalman ZM-NB47J oversized heatsink, but I must move the XHAT away from the Pi to make room for the heatsink.
A male-to-female GPIO 40 pin cable costs more than the Pi on Amazon, so I went with a 40 wire jumper cable set ( see picture please). For now the XHAT is hanging from the Picade, this is just a working setup, I plan to secure it later to the side of the Picade.

The Picade turns on all right, it’s running Lakka, which also works fine. However, I am getting constant low voltage warnings, and the Pi isn’t even over locked yet. I should have seen this coming, those rainbow jumper cables must cause too much of a voltage drop from the XHAT to the Pi.
My PSU is the oficial one (5.1v 3A).

I’d ask, how can I solve this? I thought maybe with a 12v PSU and a 5v power regulator between it and the XHAT?

I’ll be grateful for any recommendations both of setups and what to buy.

Question: New Picade Console HDMI sound setting with MAME

@Tak_Takenaka wrote:

Hi, I had just built the Picade Console case New HAT included (New Picade Console)
After run the patch from PIMORONI, hat was recognized as keyboard and setting was all easy and straight forward. Thank you PIMORONI.

however I have one issue…

Please let me know how to change the config.txt or any other altered files back to use only HDMI sound out.

Before the patch running, all sound can be came out from HDMI setting. However after the patch running
N64, PCEngine, Megadrve etc can play the game sound through HDMI but all ARCADE emulation can only play through the internal speaker connected with new HAT and can not control to switch back to HDMI sound any longer.

Please let me know the solution or what this initial setting patch from PIMORONI changed in the retropie configuration files ?

Picade 2019 (Pi4 compatible) with Pi3?

@Peer wrote:

Does this work with Pi3 as well? thanks

“ Picade is now Raspberry Pi 4 compatible and includes a new USB-C version of Picade X HAT!

The all-new Picade has been completely redesigned, from the inside out! There’s new artwork, a new display and display driver board, dedicated power button, an all-new Picade X HAT (now with USB-C), easier wiring, easier access to the interior of the cabinet, beautiful new packaging, a bunch of extra goodies (stickers and an enamel Picade pin), and a gorgeous Picade poster and assembly instructions.

Picade comes in kit form, and it’ll take around two to three hours to build. The cabinet is made from powder-coated MDF, giving it a quality look and feel similar to a full-size arcade. All you’ll need to add is a Raspberry Pi, USB-C power supply, and micro-SD card.

I reply yes and the it does a load of stuff and the comes back:-

Picade for Multiplayer

Hi Everyone,

I have purchased a Piacade for use as a project in the school I work in to engage students in the Raspberry Pi and get them thinking about iconic 2D era games before making their own games in Construct 3.

Only issue is it is a bit of a solo affair and wondered if there is a way to add a second controller (picade console?) or network 2 picades (not sure how many older games would support this).

Thanks

My finalized picade, and feedback on the build

@raphaelc wrote:

I thought I would share a bit on my experience of the Picade build, and also give you a preview of the result

so 1st of all, it was really fun building it, but I am a hobbyist and love to build things, so I might be a bit biased. it took about an afternoon to get everything together, and then I concentrated another half day on setting up the software.

things to improve:

  • I purchased the 10-inch screen, and the instructions are not so good for it, there are many unused panels which are supposed to be used for the 8-inch, so I ended up starting to set up those, and only after a while I realized both the 8 and 10 inch panels were in the box, and I had to figure out by myself which ones to use. furthermore, of course there is nothing to tighten the screen in place besides the other parts around it.
  • the stickers which are provided don’t stick to the cabinet. you would think that’s precisely what they are here for, they only stick to the acrylic parts.
  • I would recommend to add the hdmi_force_hotplug=1 in the config.txt before actually booting for the first time. once the retropie image burned, we can change the config.txt file at the root, so no need to boot once, and then edit the file, because the screen will remain blank.
  • I didn’t understand what the the keypad component is for, the thing connected to the video driver.

the good stuff: the gameplay is really good, enjoy very much the quality of the joystick, the materials, the screens, and buttons are exactly right in placement. since I was already playing with retropie before this build, the software setup was simple. it’s a really cute little toy, and I have already spent hours of gameplay on it.

@RunDavidMC wrote:

Hey, I just got a Picade with 10" screen for my birthday yesterday, and everything is working great, except for one thing. The power button does not work. It will light up the LED, but when you press it, it does not change anything. I can get touch the two wires together and that will count as the button being pressed, but the button itself does not complete the circuit. Could I get a replacement somewhere for cheap or free? Thanks!
