Picade 10" - RetroPie Not Booting

@Intex wrote:

I’ve recently purchased a 10" Picade unit. I finished building it yesterday and overall happy with it, however I have a couple of issues.

Problem 1: RetroPie Booting Issue

I have a Raspberry Pi3 B+ which I’ve been using with RetroPie 4.5. Everything works fine with the official power supply and connected via HDMI to my TV. I then built the Picade unit and put the same Raspberry Pi3 B+ in the cabinet. As the 10" version comes with the HAT board, I’d connected this to the Pie 3. The power supply I’m using is an official power supply that comes with the newer Pi 4 and which I’ve connected using the USB-C cable.

When powering on the cabinet, I can see that the Pi3 goes seems to start up OK as you get the red light, followed by flicking green. However, with the same SD card that contained my RetroPie 4.5 installation, on boot the screen just showed HDMI and then shortly after displayed NO SIGNAL DETECTED. At first, I thought this must be a cable/connection issue, but everything looked good.

So, I decided to get another SD card and flash another Retropie install (same 4.5 version) in case something was corrupted. That flashed successfully and I tried booting that, but had the same problem.

So, I decided to use SD card that came with NOOBS and tried booting from that. That worked straight away and I was able to install LAKKA. So, there can’t be anything wrong with the screen/connections etc. as everything works. I’m thinking that it must be something to do with the flashing of the image?

Problem 2: Power Button

The power LED light on the right-hand side of the cabinet is always lit (very dim). If I press the button, it powers on the Rasp OK. However, nothing happens if you press the button again. Is this be design and you have to pull the power cable every time? I can’t imagine it would be - hence the question. It also seems odd that the LED light is always on. Shouldn’t that just come on when you press to turn it on?

Are there external USB connections to allow for a second controller connection etc? for 2 player action?
I can’t make out from the photos etc.

Also, are there any plans for Pimoroni to create just a USB joystick only version? ie without the Pi inards? For second player action?

Picade not working

Favorites in ES not saving on shutdown

@stet wrote:

I just completed setting up a new 10inch Picade and finally got the controls working correctly (originally had an issue where select would start recording video, not an uncommon problem it seems). However I have now noticed a new problem. When I press the power button to shutdown the script closes ES and starts a shutdown of the Pi, which does seem to be working as expected but none of my favorites or other changes that I made in ES are being saved. Is the shutdown script actually properly shutting down ES to allow these changes to be saved?

Vertical Picade?

I’m a proud owner of an “older” Picade model, which I enjoy a lot.

So, I was thinking, wouldn’t be cool to have the option of a “vertical” Picade with a 3:4 or 9:16 lcd? All the components of the current model may be re-used, just the cabinet should be adapted to the new form factor.

This will be a perfect for vertical shooters and also pinball games, which are more relevant now that the Raspberry pi 4’s horsepower may enable to run. Also the Pi 4’s double hdmi output may make possible to implement a dynamic marquee or a pinball DMD screen. See some examples below:

Change picade's switch functionality

I will be using my picade into a toy I’m enhancing, and the toy was controlled by a key acting as a momentary switch (Turn right to close the circuit, turn left to open it).

I made some tests with the picade but its power functionality seems to work like a toggle switch (toggle once to power on, toggle once agin to power off).

Is there a way to change this power on functionality ?

PiCade Button Mapping Help

@BITbOY wrote:

Hey guys, for months i struggled to get my Picade (Original) to work with any emulator, the buttons work flawlessly in the ES menu, but when i launched any rom the binds would be all out of whack, now i seemed to have found a solution by creating a custom map using button ID’s, but i can only find the numerical ID for A, B, X, Y, Start, Select/Coin, L, and R buttons. I was hoping someone can shed light on the Numerical ID of the Volume buttons as id like to remap them to exit the emulation as i cannot currently do so with the binds i have. Here is my binds currently:

input_device = “Arduino LLC Arduino Leonardo”
input_driver = “udev”
input_l_btn = “8”
input_load_state_btn = “5”
input_start_btn = “13”
input_exit_emulator_btn = “7”
input_down_axis = “+1”
input_r_btn = “11”
input_save_state_btn = “2”
input_right_axis = “+0”
input_state_slot_increase_axis = “+0”
input_select_btn = “12”
input_left_axis = “-0”
input_state_slot_decrease_axis = “-0”
input_l2_btn = “9”
input_up_axis = “-1”
input_a_btn = “10”
input_b_btn = “9”
input_reset_btn = “3”
input_enable_hotkey_btn = “8”
input_r2_btn = “11”
input_x_btn = “7”
input_menu_toggle_btn = “4”
input_y_btn = “6”

I am looking to give my Picade (Newest version) an upgrade.

Is the 10inch Upgrade Kit worth the price? Do you really notice the difference of those 2 inches?

Also, I am looking for some arcade buttons that light up. However, I have no idea to start. I would prefer to grab something from Ebay. but I have no idea what I should look for and if I will need another power supply.

Thanks for your help!

Picade console - battery power options?

@Skilgannon1971 wrote:

Hi learned forum folks :)

I built the picade console recently. Got a nice long HDMI cable for using it with the “Big TV” but wondering, has anyone any experience of powering it with a Lithium Ion battery pack? I’m thinking something that could be used to plug the 5v Micro USB into the wall and power / charge the console at the same time but also power it on it’s own to avoid plugging it into a power source for TV’s / monitors that aren’t close to where you may be sitting with the console… I think there would be enough space inside the case for a pack - just not sure which components I would need… Any guidance please?

@chon31 wrote:

Hi~ I’ve been using this picade 10 for several months without any problem.

But, suddenly it occurs.

This is what I did with several images.

  1. Make image and put SD card into my picade 10.
  2. Boot with usb keyboard.
  3. Connect wifi win Setup Menu.
  4. F4
  5. curl https://get.pimoroni.com/picadehat | bash
  6. shutdown -r now
  7. Configure Input -> Click my buttons -> It shows ‘keyboard’ (not Gpio Controller~ )

It recognizes my stick and button as keyboard, so when I connect the real keyboard, My stick and botton doesn’t work.

I tried tried tried with several images, but all failed.

In several months ago, there was no problem.

Any changes in picadeHat download after new PicadeHat X (for raspberry pi 4) release?

plz, help~ thanks.

Hi,

I have the 10inch Picade with PI4.
Currently only Lakka support PI4 so I have installed it but I have problems with picadehat script for setup audio and buttons.

With SSH i tried the command “curl https://… | bash” for install but curl is not supported.
So, I have downloaded the script manually and copied to folder via SCP command but the script doesn’t works for error that say that found an unexpected “(“ characters (seems that array is unrecognized).
Also I have noticed that apt-get command is disable on Lakka so will be not possible to execute the commands inside the script.

Have you any solution for that?

Thank you

I have a player x board intended for P2 but I cannot seem to get retroarch to recognize the inputs. I have tried a few combos of the old picade hat (usbh), keyboard (usbk), and player x (usbx) to no success.

All 3: Buttons on usbx don’t work.
Usbh and usbx: can’t get into retroarch menu which is typically f1 for me (not select+x for some reason) because I don’t have a keyboard.
Usbx and usbk: keyboard won’t load retroarch menu via f1 anymore.

Using a pi 3 b+.

No gamepad detected

@flemse wrote:

I have installed my Picade using the youtube instructions and really look forward to be using it

But - it doesn’t work. It comes up saying “No gamepad detected”

What I have done :

reboot

after reboot :

root@retropie:~# dtoverlay -l
No overlays loaded

root@retropie:~# dtoverlay picade

  • Failed to apply overlay ‘0_picade’ (kernel)

I have also tried : watch -n 0.1 gpio readall

  • And it seems to detect all buttons and joystick directions

/boot/overlays/picade.dtbo exists
dtoverlay=picade is in /boot/config.txt
/etc/udev/rules.d/10-picade.rules exists

I have also tried installed the newest and an older release of Raspian (and curl…) but still not able to load the overlay. Hwo do I get it to work ?

Latest Picade with a 3 A+?

@MarcG wrote:

I dropped the right hints and got a Picade and Pi 4 for my birthday (Easiest way to get one in the house).

I’m keen to do a build, but as Retropie isn’t fit for purpose on the Pi4 yet I was considering picking up a Pi 3 in the meantime and using that.

Looks like they only sell the 3 A+ here now, would that work? Will I need some different connectors/psu as all the bits I got are geared towards the Pi 4?

Thanks.
